You Have More Clothes Than You Think: Nothing to Wear, Part 1 of 7

You open your closet. It's full. And somehow, there's nothing to wear.

Everyone has been there. But here's the thing: you almost certainly have plenty of clothes. You're just only familiar with a small slice of them.

Most of us reach for the same handful of pieces over and over. If you're lucky, maybe 10 to 15% of your closet. At least, that's how it feels. The rest is there, but it's background noise: things you forgot you owned, things you're not sure how to wear, and things you keep meaning to get to.

Admit it

The first step is honest and a little humbling: admitting that "nothing to wear" really means "nothing I know how to wear right now."

That's good news. It means the answer probably isn't shopping. It's getting reacquainted with what you already have.

The journey from here

This series walks through the whole process, one step at a time:

  1. Know what you have. You're here.

  2. Assess your needs. Figure out what your clothes actually need to do, and how you want to feel in them.

  3. Make a mood board. Find the looks you're drawn to this season.

  4. Do a closet overhaul. Go category by category, try everything on, and keep what you love.

  5. Make a style book. Optional, but fun, and it helps you remember.

  6. Style your outfits. Build complete looks for the moments in your life.

  7. Make a wish list. Find the few pieces that would make everything else work harder.

By the end, you'll have a closet full of outfits you actually want to wear, and a clear idea of what, if anything, is missing.
